Economic independence is very important for women in rural Central America. A variety of factors can limit a mother’s income, such as death, serious injury or illness of a spouse, divorce, or separation. But economic independence for women means more than just financial security; it enables a higher degree of reinvestment in families and communities. For example, María and nine other women of San Miguel, Mexico, have received loans in order to start small businesses. Maria and this group of women are producing and selling hand-sewn blouses, belts, and bracelets that generate income for their families. Their products are being sold in outside markets, ensuring maximum profit. María recognizes the importance of this opportunity for the women of her community and she is quick to encourage others. Despite bearing the triple discrimination of being poor, indigenous, and female, María says, “I feel very proud. More than anything I want to help my people, and I am happy to be a part of Agros who supports our initiatives.”
