After three frustrating years working on his own or not working at all, Víctor, of El Milagro, El Salvador, decided to join in with the other farmers working with Agros staff on a demonstration parcel using organic compost and fertilizer produced by the community’s composting latrines. “At first, life in the community was hard, especially since the communal projects required so much initial manual labor.” Víctor’s disbelief, however, finally converted into contagious enthusiasm as he is now seen telling whoever will listen about the inexpensive fertilizer that he learned to make from compost. His wife Ana adds, “We are grateful to Agros for the opportunity they have given us to work for a better life through these new projects.”

“My granddaughter was getting sick from the smoke and the doctor wouldn’t see us because we were poor. But when Agros came, one of the first projects we did was build stoves and latrines for all the homes. We learned how to build them and we also taught our neighbors. And now, I can stay with my granddaughter instead of traveling so far to collect firewood. The chimney keeps our home smoke-free and my family healthy. Thank you Agros!”
